Billie Eilish's Hair Transformation, From Bright Green To Blond

Billie Eilish may be known for her breathy singing voice, but she is also recognized for her ever-changing hairstyle. The "Ocean Eyes" singer has gone from platinum blond to black, and everywhere in between, but many fans may not have known that her real hair color is a light golden shade. In 2019, she shared a throwback pic of herself as a tween in a rainbow-colored sparkly dress, celebrating the launch of her would-be hit "Bad Guy," featuring Justin Bieber. "Anything is possible man," read her caption — and when it comes to the color of Eilish's hair, that much is certainly true.

When Eilish rose to fame as a 15-year-old, she flaunted ice-blond locks, which were a few shades lighter than her natural color. However, she went through a lavender phase in 2018 and soon switched it up to a bright blue. Naturally, the Grammy award winner didn't keep the color for too long, and her hair evolution continued with variations of the rainbow that have kept fans on their toes.

December 2018: Billie Eilish rocked a bright teal color

After dying her hair blue, Billie Eilish had major regrets. "Here's what's annoying: I hate the color blue — it's my least favorite color. I don't know how I ended up dying it blue," she told Buzzfeed. Eilish eventually compromised with a vivid teal shade, which she displayed in a December 2018 Instagram post. "17 in 17 days," she told her fans. Eilish was clearly moving toward her green phase as seen in her following post where she was dressed in a neon tee, shorts, and sneakers, with an olive-colored snakeskin jacket and matching hat. "Green era," a fan noted.

Eilish wore her green shade for a few months before it settled into a gorgeous grayish-tinged color. In an interview with High Snobiety, the "What Was I Made For?" singer revealed why she dyed her naturally light locks. "I didn't feel sexy for one second of being blond. When I was blond, people treated me differently. People completely changed their demeanor [around me]," she stated.

March 2019: Billie Eilish dyed her hair black

After a very colorful couple of years, Billie Eilish decided to go dark and debuted inky black hair at the 2019 iHeartRadio Awards. The then-17-year-old completed her gothic look with a spiked choker necklace and a black "Sailor Moon" matching shirt and shorts set. In her typical wry humor, she threw some shade when she posted on Instagram, "Thank you @iheartradio for making me come and then not giving me the award."

Color plays a big role in Eilish's life, as she has synesthesia. "Every person I know has their own color and shape and number in my head, but it's normal to me," she revealed in an interview with Rolling Stone. She associates her brother's name Finneas with dark green and her song "Bad Guy" with yellow and red. "It's not hot, but warm, like an oven. And it smells like cookies," she described. It's apparent Eilish knew she wasn't going to keep the color of her locks the same for too long. When showing off her new driver's license, she listed her hair as "other."

July 2019: Billie Eilish's green and black hair combo became her signature look

Billie Eilish started a huge trend when she mixed in neon green roots to her black hair, which she showed off in her July 2019 Instagram post. The artist highlighted the shocking color combo with futuristic neon green shades and a matching sweatshirt. That year was a good one for Eilish, emotionally. "2019, that period of my life when I dyed my hair green, I was completely unstoppable. I felt like I was on the moon. And I remember at the time being like, I'm finally happy. I'd never been happy before, and I just wanted to stay happy," she told the Los Angeles Times.

Perhaps Eilish got a sign that she was overprocessing her hair. When she was seen with much shorter locks, TMZ asked her about the mullet look. Eilish laughed, "Mullet? What do you mean mullet? ... You know what happened, somebody dyed my hair and they burned half of it off." The pop star then declared that she was trying to grow it out.

March 2021: Billie Eilish went back to her blond roots

Billie Eilish's green and black hair combo was her longest run to date before going back to platinum blond in March 2021. "Pinch me," she shared on an Instagram post with over 20 million likes. In an interview with British Vogue, Eilish, who is known for her baggy clothes, looked like a modern-day version of Marilyn Monroe with her icy locks and a corset top. She revealed that it took four trips to the salon to get rid of the black and neon green dye she sported for almost two years. Despite previously stating that she didn't feel "sexy" as a blond, she told British Vogue of her new hair color, "I feel more like a woman, somehow."

Eilish made a surprise virtual appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and shared that a fan who had edited her with blond hair inspired her to switch up her look. "I didn't think it was going to happen because my hair's been through so much ... but I did it!" she declared. Eilish, who had to wear a wig while transitioning from dark to light, stated that it took six weeks to lift the color and then a few more weeks to complete the process. "Oh my god, it took a long time," she laughed.

December 2021: Billie Eilish went brunette

Despite fans loving her new look, Billie Eilish's blond era lasted less than a year before she switched it up again to a deep, chocolate brown, which is a hair color that looks amazing with blue eyes. "Miss me?" Eilish asked on Instagram. "Hair changes always get me," a fan replied. The singer had previously gone a light mushroom shade for her music video, "Xanny," but returned back to her signature black and slime green color before switching it up to blond.

It turned out that platinum was not the hair color for Eilish. "I was really excited for the blond era — like, Blond Billie is gonna be so cool. But it did not go how I wanted it to go," she shared with the Los Angeles Times. "I completely had no idea who I was. I came up with this whole aesthetic, and I just got swallowed up into it," Eilish added. She tried the brown shade for a couple of months before dyeing it black again in February 2022. The "Your Power" singer stayed with the color for over a year before the ever-changing chameleon adopted a new hair color yet again.

August 2023-Present: Billie Eilish added a shock of red to her black hair

Black seemed to be Billie Eilish's fave shade for a while but in a throwback to 2019, the trendsetter brought back vivid colorful roots again — this time to a fluorescent red. "Remember me?" she asked on Instagram while sharing a picture of her new 'do. "OMG THE ROOTS ERA HAS RETURNED!!!" a fan replied.

Eilish opened up to the audience during Lollapalooza 2023 on what prompted her to go red. "You know what's funny? So I dyed the roots green ... four years ago like a month ago. And my plan was always green roots and then like a month later, I was going to dye my roots red. That was always my plan, and I just left them green for f***ing two years. I don't know why," she told her fans. "And so I wanted to do this for four years and I did it," Eilish continued. During the 2024 Academy Awards, the winner for best original song showed up with her roots completely dyed black again. As for her next hair color, we can only guess what she'll come up with.
